Why does my website look like this?aka Why caring about compatibility is important Recently I saw a blog post by Jamie Zawinski on "modern web technologies" not supporting a 5 year old browser. And that got me thinking. why must web developers make sites that require brand new computers and brand new browsers for things to work. But that's a whole can of worms I do not want to open, rather I'd like to talk about why my site is the way it is, because this is related to all of that. I'm sick and tired of websites needing fancy new stuff to run. So my site is designed to run on literally anything. I have tested this website on Windows 98, MacOS 9, Plan9, and way more OSes even down to Amiga Workbench with AWeb. HELL I am writing this very page on a Thinkpad T60 running Debian Linux using Emacs, 32-bit only, on a low low end Core Duo. And reviewed over using the Falkon browser, to then be tested on various retro machines.
